Inaugural Radio Program "Financial abuse of women in the name of the Lord"
Forty years ago when I started teaching about marriage, a significant number of people tried to pressure me to use my influence to condemn women working outside the home. I told them I couldn't find that in the Bible and refused.
The radio program will reference the Woman of Great Price in Proverbs 31 and the Shulammite in the Song of Solomon. The Shulammite's brothers put her in charge of the vineyard. As a young teenager, she took care of the finances of paying the king (the highest government official) and the workers while refusing to get in bed with Solomon to advance her career. Both women were successful entrepreneurs and marketers. Isn't the Bible and God's love of women neat!
Men like to tell an old joke: "I decide all the important things while my wife makes the minor decisions...I decide the important things...like when we get out of the war with Iraq and what to do with the national budget...My wife decides the minor things...like when we'll buy a new car and when we'll fix the roof." Laugh. Laugh.
Isn't this what Prov. 31:10-31 says: The husband, as an elder, sits in the gate (where legal decisions were made) passing judgment on legal matters and property disputes along with helping deal with other people's problems, while his wife operates a home business, has tremendous marketing skills with the local merchants, manages employees (her children), and buys land with her profits (makes investments).
Just like religious leaders obsess over subjection while ignoring sin in the home, we get it exactly backwards on the finances in the home. One wife asked her husband what happened to all the money they were sacrificing to build up for a major expense. He told her, "I'm sure King David didn't explain to all his wives how he spent the money, so I'm not going to tell you where the money went." The financial abuse against Christian women in the name of the Lord is outrageous.
